First, I figured out how much money I needed at a bare minimum to live every month. For me, the number was about $5,000 per month, or $60,000 per year.

Finally, I took that number and divided it by 0.05. Why 0.05? Because I'm assuming that I can always get a 5% return on my money. By dividing by 0.05, we can figure out what the total amount of money $60,000 is 5% of.
