Bell's Palsy Synesis Recovery Program
A program designed to address synesis (involuntary facial movements) following Bell's Palsy, focusing on regaining individual control of facial muscles and improving facial symmetry.
Program Modules
Assess Your Synesis Patterns
Before starting the exercises, it's crucial to identify your specific synesis patterns to tailor the exercises effectively.
Record Lip Movements
WeeklyRecord yourself performing active lip movements like smooching, rolling lips, smiling, and frowning. Observe any corresponding eye movements. **Behavioral Target:** Record for 3 minutes, focusing on controlled movements.
โTake a little video of yourself first look at active lip movements and see what happens to your eyes smooch your lips roll your lips smile or frown if you can and see what happens to your eyesโ
Record Eye Movements
WeeklyRecord yourself performing active eye movements like raising eyebrows, furrowing brows (keeping eyes open), squeezing eyes shut, and opening eyes wide. Observe any corresponding lip movements. **Behavioral Target:** Aim for symmetrical movements and document any asymmetry observed.
โNext we'll look at active eye movements and see what happens to your lips raise your eyebrows Furrow your eye breath together but try to keep your eyes open squeeze your eyes shut open your eyes really wideโ
Record Tongue Movements
WeeklyRecord yourself moving your tongue without moving your eyes: tongue and cheek with lips open and closed, and with resistance. Observe any eye or facial movements. **Behavioral Target:** Spend 2 minutes exploring tongue movements, noting any unintended facial movements.
โLast let's look at your tongue can you move your tongue without eye movements tongue and cheek tongue and cheek with your lips open and closing if you're curious you can also give yourself a little resistance just to test out which side of your tongue is strongerโ
Eyebrow Elevation with Smooch & Tongue
Exercises to elevate eyebrows and open eyes, combined with lower face movements to separate facial muscle control. **Scaffolding:** Start with individual eyebrow elevation, then gradually add smooching and tongue movements.
Elevate Eyebrows with Stretch
DailyRaise eyebrows as high as possible, adding a gentle stretch to increase flexibility. Consider using an electrical stimulation tool for assistance. **Behavioral Target:** Achieve 10 controlled repetitions, focusing on isolating the eyebrow muscles. Track eyebrow height improvement weekly.
โRaise the eyebrows as high as possible and add a little stretch if necessary to free it upโ
Smooch & Tongue with Humming
DailyWhile elevating eyebrows, smooch your lips, stick your tongue in one cheek and hum slowly and long. Repeat on the other cheek. Adjust reps based on tongue weakness. **Behavioral Target:** Aim for 5 repetitions on each side, minimizing unintended eye movements. Focus on controlled breathing.
โThen try to smooch and stick your tongue in one cheek and start humming hum as slow and long as possible take a breath and stick your tongue in the other cheek with another H smooch five times each cheek if you figure out which side your tongue is weaker in which cheek do two hums on the weak side one hum on the strong sideโ
Tongue on Roof of Mouth with Humming
DailyElevate eyebrows (with or without frowning), place tongue on the roof of your mouth, and hold while humming as long as possible. **Behavioral Target:** Hold for 15 seconds each time, repeating 5 times. Visualize relaxing facial muscles during humming.
โWith the forehead and eyebrows you can also do this with smiling tongue on the roof the mouth hold for five hums as long as you can if you were able to frown try it with frowning eyebrows up at the tool and frown the humming helps you breathe and activate cranial nerve number 10โ
Experiment with Movement Sequences
Experiment with different sequences of movements (starting with the bottom or top half of the face) to find what helps separate the movements best. **Scaffolding:** Break down each sequence into smaller parts if needed. Record yourself and analyze the footage.
Bottom-Up Sequence
DailyStart with smooching and tongue humming, then add eyebrows and eyes wide open. Observe the control you have over your eye movements. **Behavioral Target:** Rate your eye control on a scale of 1-5 for each trial. Focus on minimizing eye squinting.
โTry this at home see if starting at the bottom half of your face with a smooch first tongue humming then adding the eyebrows and eyes wide open is easier to control the eyesโ
Top-Down Sequence
DailyStart with raising eyebrows and opening eyes wide, then add smooching and tongue humming. Observe the control you have over your eye movements. **Behavioral Target:** Compare the top-down and bottom-up sequences. Which provides better control? Focus on isolating each movement.
โand reverse so you can have fun with this you have to kind of try it out and see which way is going to help your face compensate and separate the movements the bestโ
What You'll Accomplish
- Identify individual synesis patterns.
- Improve independent control of facial muscles.
- Reduce involuntary muscle movements during voluntary actions.
- Increase facial symmetry.
- Strengthen weaker facial muscles.
- Develop compensatory strategies to minimize synesis effects.
