Digging for Focus: A 3-Step System for Productivity
Learn a 3-step process to reliably achieve focus and avoid distractions, based on the analogy of gold mining. This program emphasizes the importance of preparation and understanding your brain's different modes of thinking.
Program Modules
Understanding the Focus Game
Understand why focusing is difficult and how it's like mining for gold. Learn about focused and diffused modes of thinking.
Reflect on Your Focus Challenges
DailyThink about the times you struggle to focus. What are the common triggers and distractions?
โGetting to that focused dialed in state of mind is a lot like mining for gold.โ
Learn About Focused & Diffused Modes
DailyRead about focused and diffused modes from 'A Mind for Numbers' by Barbara Oakley. Understand the benefits of both.
โIn her book, A Mind for Numbers, the author Barbara Oakley calls these the focused and the diffused modes of thinking.โ
Step 1: Get Clear on Your Very Next Action
Master the first step: Defining the Very Next Action (VNA). Learn and practice the 5-minute prep exercise.
Identify a Vague Task
DailyChoose a task from your to-do list that feels overwhelming or directionless.
โIf you look at the goal lists and the to do lists of most people, you're going to see goals like eat healthier and to do's like write the paper or work on the sales page.โ
5-Minute Prep Exercise
DailySet a timer for 5 minutes. Break down the vague task into a clear, obvious, very next action. Estimate time and soak in details/context.
โInstead, what you want to do is try to get that direction. So take five minutes or maybe even set a timer for five minutes and soak in the details of your task.โ
Step 2: Diffuse Mode Break
Learn the power of diffused mode thinking. Incorporate 20-minute walks or relaxing activities to spark creativity.
Go for a Diffuse Mode Walk
DailyTake a 20-minute walk without focusing on any specific problem. Let your mind wander.
โGo for a 20-minute walk, or maybe take a nap, or clean your room. Do something that lets your brain relax and not have to intensely focus on any one thing.โ
Clean Your Workspace
WeeklyDeclutter and organize your workspace. A clean environment can promote a clearer mind.
Step 3: Focused Work with a Timer
Use the Pomodoro Technique (or hourglass) to externalize self-discipline. Commit to focused work in 25-minute intervals.
Set a Timer (Pomodoro)
DailySet a timer for 25 minutes. Focus solely on your Very Next Action (VNA).
โSo at this point, just set a timer for 25 minutes and commit to working only on that task as best as you can. This is the classic Pomodoro Techniqueโ
Experiment with Hourglass or Silent Timer
DailyTry using an hourglass or silencing your timer to maintain focus beyond 25 minutes if you're in the zone.
โAnd this is actually quite useful because I have found through years of doing Pomodoro sessions that I almost never stop working and take a break when that 25 minute timer goes off.โ
What You'll Accomplish
- Understand the common reasons for difficulty in focusing.
- Learn to define a clear, actionable 'Very Next Action'.
- Utilize the power of 'diffused mode' thinking for creative problem-solving.
- Implement the Pomodoro Technique to maintain focus during work sessions.
- Experiment with timer variations to optimize individual focus strategies.
