Training the Hyper Dog: Focus and Impulse Control
A program focused on channeling the energy of hyper dogs into positive behaviors using positive reinforcement and clear communication.
Program Modules
Building Attention: The 'Look at Me' Game
Establish eye contact and focus using a hand signal and positive reinforcement with a clicker.
Introduce Hand Signal
DailyUse an exaggerated hand gesture along with the verbal cue 'Look at me'.
βDogs are heavily responsive to exaggerated body language so in the beginning it might look something like look at me, like this, really really exaggeratingβ
Click and Reward
DailyClick the clicker the instant the dog makes eye contact and immediately reward with a treat.
βI'm gonna click because I like that remember the click means "Good dog, I like what you did, you win a prize."β
Keep the Pace Up!
DailyStay quick and agile. React the INSTANT the dog gets it right
βMost frustrating thing when working with a hyper dog is that they're so quick it is on us to speed up to keep up with them we've got to be able to nail the behavior with a clicker the Instant they do it right so in this case look at me right there.β
Impulse Control: Leave It
Teach the dog to ignore tempting stimuli using the 'Leave It' command.
Drop It, But Not Really
DailyDrop a treat on the ground, but prevent the dog from getting it with the leash.
βI'm gonna drop it on the ground. However. What's she gonna do when I drop it on the ground? She's gonna go for it. Show me a nice loose leash here, no tension, so I'm gonna drop it But I'm not gonna let her get itβ
Click When They Look Away
DailyWhen the dog looks away from the treat, click and give them a different treat from your hand.
βwhen she looks away same concept I'm gonna click her, and I'm gonna pick up the treat, and I'm gonna give it to her.β
Lure into Position and Reward
Using a treat to coax a dog into a specific position
Lure into Sit
DailyUse a lure to teach a dog to sit
βTraining is a concept of training where we use a treat to coax our dog into a specific position So we're gonna use that nose to our advantage, right here So just like this Good, and we're gonna say "Sit" as his butt hits the ground.β
Lure into Down
DailyUse a lure to get dog into a down position
βWe're gonna use the same concept of training here We're gonna lure them down.β
